The Finest Hours is a 2016 American action-thriller film directed by Craig Gillespie, based on the extraordinary true story of the U.S. Coast Guard’s most daring small-boat rescue in history. It stars Chris Pine and Casey Affleck and chronicles the 1952 rescue mission off the New England coast.
In February 1952, a massive winter storm off the coast of Cape Cod splits two T-2 oil tankers, the SS Fort Mercer and the SS Pendleton, in half. With most available Coast Guard forces deployed to the Fort Mercer, the crew of the sinking Pendleton’s stern section, led by Chief Engineer Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck), must work together to keep the fragmented hull afloat.
Meanwhile, at the Chatham, Massachusetts Coast Guard station, Chief Warrant Officer Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana) orders Boatswain’s Mate First Class Bernard “Bernie” Webber (Chris Pine) to take a small, 12-seat lifeboat, the CG-36500, and a crew of three volunteers out to rescue the stranded men on the Pendleton, against seemingly impossible odds. Braving hurricane-force winds and towering waves that disable their compass and damage the boat, Webber and his men embark on a heroic mission.
The film follows both groups as they face peril: Sybert’s crew attempts to ground the sinking stern section on a shoal to buy time, while Webber’s small crew navigates the treacherous conditions to reach them. The mission becomes legendary for the immense bravery and resourcefulness displayed by the Coast Guardsmen and the tanker’s crew.
